A Typical Day
Children are dropped off at the main entrance in the back where they are greeted by Mrs. Hoover and helped into the building where their teacher is waiting for them. Once the class has arrived, teachers escort the children to the classroom. The second floor center doors are locked to provide security. If the church office is closed, the main doors downstairs are also locked.
After hanging up their belongings, the children enter the classroom and immediately wash their hands. We teach good health habits and frequent hand washing is essential.
The room is set up into different learning centers and the children can get right to work. Block play, dramatic play, small manipulative toys, art center and reading are always available. A teacher-directed art or science activity engages the children in small groups. The children have about an hour to move about the room trying different activities. During this time teachers are actively engaged, assisting children, and encouraging their investigative play. If behavior issues arise a teacher will assist them in making positive choices and help re-direct behavior when necessary.

The leader rings the bell for clean up time and everyone participates. Our toy containers are labeled with words and pictures so that children can practice early reading skills.
Once the room is tidied we gather together on the rug for group time. Songs and finger plays give children the opportunity to practice memorization skills and rhyming words. Reading wonderful stories together starts children on the path to literacy.
There is a scripture theme for each month and Bible stories are a regular part of our curriculum. Learning how God made the world and the story of the Good Samaritan teach us to love God and love each other. Learning how Jesus calmed the storm teaches us that He is always watching over us.
After a bathroom break and hand washing the children quietly “read” a book on the rug until snack is ready. Parents provide a healthy snack for their child, preferable a fresh fruit or vegetable. Please do not send juice boxes. The school provides organic milk or water for children to drink.

Gross motor play either outdoors or in our large gym gives children the chance to move! Again we want to encourage good health habits, making friends, and loving the outdoors. Our outdoor garden provides many science lessons.
We end our day with a little music and movement and perhaps another story. We use a variety of children’s music that gets us moving and helps us work on listening skills at the same time.
Our day ends with a ritual goodbye song. This signals to the children that the day is over and they are headed home. The teacher has a quick minute to touch base with caregivers and report on the day. Regular emails from the director and teacher keep parents informed about our school day. Our Facebook page is updated often so parents have a peek inside our classroom.
Special events throughout the year include: visits from the Peninsula Library Lady, Fall Family Fun Night, Thanksgiving celebration, Birthday Party for Jesus, Pajama Day, Jim Gill concert, Valentine’s Day, Easter egg hunt, I Love You Teas, Ecology Week and the Akron Zoomobile.
